Hi. I really enjoyed this post. You have a beautiful blog. I love the Shakers. I did a bit of research about them when I was in graduate school. I just had the opportunity to interview Deborah Woodworth who penned an entire mystery series about Sister Rose Callahan, a Shaker eldress. http://tinyurl.com/78qenuo

Hi Jamie!

Glad to get your email today and to discover your blog and world a bit more online. So nice to know there are other writers right here in Nancy.

I'm a member of the Pleasant Hill Shaker Singers and our son Eli is the godson of one of the last remaining Shakers up in Sabbathday Lake, Maine (Sister Frances Carr, who was adopted and raised by the order in the middle of the last century). We too are intrigued by so much about the Shaker religion: I particularly like their idea of a Mother and Father deity. How lovely! How progressive!

Best, Catherine

So interesting! I hadn't really thought very much about the shakers before reading this post. I had some idea about who they were but had no idea they they lived in a "commune" sort of place or why they died out.
I'm no student of history so I don't think I particularly feel connected to any one part of it. However, call it the romantic in me, but I always did love the turn of the 19th century. But that's probably just because I love Pride and Prejudice. The sort of social manners (so sorely lacking now) and older English is just interesting. Anyway, interesting post and I'm happy to finally have pulled away from the crazy that is finals and be able to start commenting again!

Are you on Goodreads? It's like an Amazon to-read list, but not consumerist - it's all about the books! I love it. :)

Thanks! I actually did try the soup (sans wine) and loved, loved, loved it! I seriously could eat bowl after bowl of it. Quite a few of my brothers enjoyed it as well. I had the leftovers for breakfast the next morning--it definitely benefits from the parmesan cheese. Anyway, thanks so much for the recipe. And I know what you mean about personality being easier to put on paper than into in-person interactions. There are things that one can write but simply not say for risk of being cheesy or awkward.

HI Jamie
I liked reading this, your recipe sounds good! Only, I can't believe you didn't grow your own sprouts :)) and I crossed over several years ago to whole wheat pasta, YUM, when it is not available in the type pasta I would like, I buy Barilla whole grain. So, try the whole grain pasta if not already.
P.S. I didn't realize the Johnson's' had so many hippies :))
